One beat at a time

WINNER: First Place

Do you know nearly one-third of people who have high blood pressure don't know it? One in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure and half of them don't have it under control.

Linda is 60 years old. Her husband James is 62 years old. They didn't know it either - until James had a sudden heart attack. His doctors made it clear that if James did not get his blood pressure under control, he could have another heart attack, stroke, or even worse. They were all shocked. They decided to take control immediately.

First, records. Linda got James's EHR - electronic health record - and made sure it was accurate and up to date. Second, medications. Every day, Linda sets aside James's medications. They both use smartphones for his medication reminders and tracking. Third, monitoring. They check James's blood pressure every day. He puts on the automated cuff and it does all the work - much easier than Linda thought. Fourth, healthy lifestyle. They changed their diet and started exercising to stabilize James's blood pressure. They eliminated unhealty foods. Now, they only eat heart healthy foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish. They walk, swim, or do yoga for at least 30 minutes every day. They kept James's blood pressure under control since his heart attack. Now, they enjoy a healthy lifestyle with their children and grandchildren.
